Question 1

What is Unkwn42?

Accepted Answer

Unkwn42 is a research terminal for climate science. You enter a research idea and it returns a claim-level verdict: whether a specific paper already asserts your claim (it names the paper), or exactly how your claim differs from the nearest prior work, stated as a delta. It also surfaces the prior work it rests on (including papers filed under renamed terminology), how the terminology has drifted over time, the key researchers and institutions, and the publication trend. Every paper cited is a real retrieved record, never generated.

Question 2

How does Unkwn42 help researchers?

Accepted Answer

Before committing months to an idea, a researcher can check in seconds whether it has already been done, and surface prior work that earlier searches missed because it was filed under different terminology. It maps the frontier around an idea so you can decide with full context instead of guessing.

Question 3

Who is Unkwn42 for?

Accepted Answer

Unkwn42 is for anyone in climate research checking a claim before committing months to it, defending a contribution to a reviewer or funder, entering an unfamiliar subfield, or making sure a known result has not already been done in the place they plan to do it.

Question 4

Does Unkwn42 reject ideas that overlap with prior work?

Accepted Answer

No. It is not a pass or fail uniqueness test. Replication, extension, and doing a known study in a new place are legitimate research. The verdict has three states: Claimed (a specific paper already asserts the claim), Adjacent (the nearest work is distinguishable, with the delta stated), and Open (no paper asserts it). Even a Claimed result is information for a decision: what to match if replicating, or what to differentiate against if extending.

Question 5

Will Unkwn42 invent or hallucinate citations?

Accepted Answer

No. Every paper cited is a real record retrieved from the literature, not generated. If the system cannot point to a specific paper, it does not make the claim. Grounding is verified in code before anything reaches you, and every result links to the source so you can check it yourself.

Question 6

What is Reviewer 2?

Accepted Answer

Reviewer 2 plays a hostile referee before you submit. Paste an abstract or a rough idea and it finds the papers someone could cite against your claim, ranks them by threat, states the attack a reviewer would make, and drafts a citation-grounded defence of how your work differs.

Question 7

Why not use a general AI research assistant or Google Scholar?

Accepted Answer

General research agents answer across all of science; Unkwn42 does one question in one field and goes deep. Keyword search also fails silently when you do not know the words: a paper that already did your work can sit fully indexed under a term your subfield stopped using, and no search you would think to run will surface it. Unkwn42 expands your idea across renamed and drifted terminology to retrieve exactly that prior work.

Question 8

Is Unkwn42 free?

Accepted Answer

There is a free plan with 3 checks a month across the Terminal and Reviewer 2, and Scoop Radar is included. Pro gives more usage for $9 a month or $79 a year. See https://www.unkwn42.com/pricing.
